Russia Plans Semiconductor Production, to Produce 28nm by 2030

Russia is facing sanctions from several countries for its war against Ukraine. These sanctions also include that of semiconductors from western countries. Companies like Intel, AMD, and IBM have stopped selling their products to Russia while foundries like TSMC and GlobalFoundries have also halted sales in Russia. Looking at the growing sanctions, Russia plans to be independent of western technology.

The Russian government plans to invest around 3.19 trillion rubles ($38.3 billion) in developing its local microelectronics industry along with domestic chip development, marketing of chips and training the local talent as reported by Cnews. The government will spend nearly 420 billion rubles ($5 billion) in developing newer fabrication nodes and ramping up production. The Russian government’s short-term plan includes ramping up local chip production using a 90nm fabrication technology by the end of this year, while its long-term goal includes establishing manufacturing using a 28nm node by 2030.

The country also plans to develop a reverse engineering program of foreign solutions to transfer their manufacturing within Russia. It also plans to manufacture all digital items domestically by 2024, while things that it cannot manufacture will be procured from China.
