Glasgow-based Neuranics, a specialist in ultra-sensitive magnetic sensing solutions, is set to establish the UK’s first dedicated magnetic sensor nanofabrication facility, backed by the £160 million Glasgow City Region Investment Zone. The project is one of six selected under the UK Government’s initiative to accelerate innovation in advanced manufacturing, including semiconductors.

In collaboration with Kelvin Nanotechnology and the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre at the University of Glasgow, Neuranics will build a world-class centre focused on end-to-end fabrication and assembly of magnetic sensors. The facility will feature state-of-the-art equipment, including one of only two Ion Beam Etch systems in the country, positioning Glasgow at the forefront of magnetic sensor manufacturing.

The new centre will produce Neuranics’ proprietary Tunnel Magnetoresistance (TMR) sensors, capable of detecting extremely small magnetic fields generated by the human body. These sensors enable next-generation applications in wearable devices, health monitoring, and gesture recognition, with strong interest from leading global consumer electronics firms.

By localising production, the project aims to strengthen UK-based supply chains, accelerate product development, and secure domestic ownership of valuable intellectual property. It is expected to create more than 100 skilled jobs over the next ten years across engineering, manufacturing, and commercial functions, while also offering new training opportunities through apprenticeships and graduate roles.

“This project will be a catalyst for economic growth and innovation in bio-signal monitoring,” said Noel McKenna, CEO of Neuranics. “It will provide access to world-class infrastructure and support the broader tech ecosystem in Scotland.”

The initiative aligns with the Glasgow City Region Investment Zone’s objectives, Scotland’s National Strategy for Economic Transformation, and the UK Government’s Levelling Up agenda, supporting the growth of advanced manufacturing, net-zero innovation, and inclusive career pathways in high-tech industries.
