Wireless connectivity specialist Airgain, Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRG) has introduced the NimbeLink Skywire Cat 1 bis Embedded Modem, marking the industry’s first commercially available plug-and-play Cat 1 bis modem certified for use in customer end-applications. The new product aims to significantly reduce time-to-market for developers in the industrial Internet of Things (IoT) space, offering a compact, cost-effective, and globally compatible cellular connectivity solution.
Built on next-generation Cat 1 bis technology, the Skywire modem targets a broad spectrum of IoT applications—from smart metering and asset tracking to remote monitoring and logistics—where moderate data rates, extended coverage, and efficient power consumption are critical. The modem’s key differentiator is its pre-certification for end-device use on select global networks, allowing developers to bypass time-intensive regulatory approvals and cut product launch timelines by as much as 80%.
“This launch marks a meaningful shift in simplifying cellular connectivity for IoT developers,” said Joe Porrazzo, Senior Director of Product at Airgain. “With a pre-certified, plug-and-play solution that supports global carrier networks and offers a compact industrial-grade design, we’re enabling customers to focus on innovation instead of infrastructure.”
Airgain’s Skywire Cat 1 bis modem offers competitive performance at a price point comparable to Cat M alternatives, making it a compelling upgrade path as 2G and 3G networks continue to phase out. The modem supports single-antenna design—reducing bill of materials (BOM) costs—and is built on Telit and Quectel chipsets to ensure long-term reliability and future-proofing.
Product highlights include support for both North American (TC1bisNAG) and global (QC1bisWWG) networks, a 20–30% lower MSRP compared to earlier Cat 1 models, and an industrial-grade form factor optimized for space-constrained applications. Developers also benefit from compatibility with Airgain’s Skywire 20-pin standard footprint, enabling easy drop-in replacement for legacy designs.
The Skywire Cat 1 bis modem is now available for evaluation and commercial deployment through authorized distributors such as DigiKey, Mouser, Arrow, and Richardson. Development kits and reference materials are also offered to support rapid integration.
