Krutrim Introduces India’s First Frontier Research AI Lab, Commits $1.2B Investment by Next Year

Ola’s Krutrim, India’s first AI unicorn, launches Krutrim AI Lab, the country’s first frontier AI research lab to make AI research accessible, attract the best talent, and establish India as a global leader in open-source AI. This state-of-the-art AI infrastructure aims to support R&D community and build cutting-edge AI models tailored for Indic languages and real-world applications.

Further, Krutrim announced an investment of $230 million in equity and debt with a commitment of $1.2 billion by next year. To strengthen its global collaboration, the company also announces India’s first GB200 cluster deployment along with NVIDIA scheduled to go live by March 2025. Krutrim aims to build India’s largest supercomputer in India by the end of the year.

Bhavish Aggarwal, Founder, Krutrim said, “With Krutrim, our vision is to develop AI for India and make it better for Indian languages, data scarcity and cultural context. While we are behind global benchmarks, we have made good progress in the last year. With Krutrim AI Lab, we hope that the entire Indian AI community collaborates to create a world-class Indian AI ecosystem.”

Krutrim AI Lab has open-sourced its latest Indic AI models, accelerating AI adoption and innovation across India. Committed to democratizing AI, the lab collaborates with academia, startups, and developers while leveraging advanced computing resources to build scalable and affordable AI solutions.

The newly launched models include Krutrim-2, an improved version of Krutrim 1 (7B)—India’s first large language model (LLM). Chitrarth 1, India’s first Vision Language Model, enables AI to understand images and documents, while Dhwani 1, the country’s first Speech Language Model, facilitates speech translation. Vyakhyarth 1 enhances search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and Krutrim Translate 1 advances text-to-text translation. The lab has also introduced BharatBench as a global benchmark for Indic AI performance.

Addressing India’s data scarcity, Krutrim is digitizing knowledge artefacts and building high-quality datasets to support AI in text, speech, and visual processing. To further AI development, Krutrim Cloud now offers 50+ services, including Virtual Machines (VMs), AI Pods for low-cost GPU access, and an AI Studio for building applications.

To support the company’s ambitious AI and cloud initiatives, Krutrim also announces its plans to scale up its data centre capacity to a massive 1 GW by 2028. The data centre will be a computing and data storage powerhouse, enabling Krutrim to offer world-class AI services to India and the world.
