India’s Electronics Component Scheme Attracts Rs. 1.15 Lakh Crore in Applications

India’s Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) has received an unprecedented response from both domestic and international industry players, signaling strong confidence in the country’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem. The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology reported that the scheme, approved by the Cabinet on 1 May 2025 with a fiscal outlay of Rs. 22,919 crore, has attracted 249 applications with a proposed investment of Rs. 1,15,351 crore—nearly double the targeted Rs. 59,350 crore.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, speaking at a press conference at Electronics Niketan, New Delhi, emphasized that the surge in interest reflects the growing domestic industry commitment to self-reliant electronics manufacturing, as well as increasing global confidence in India’s manufacturing capabilities. “States must seize this golden opportunity and create favorable frameworks to develop electronics manufacturing in their regions,” Vaishnaw said, noting that the sector offers significant direct and indirect employment opportunities for the youth.

The scheme is projected to generate approximately 1,42,000 direct jobs—substantially exceeding the target of 91,600—alongside a manifold number of indirect jobs, underscoring its potential to drive large-scale employment. Over the next six years, production of electronics components under the ECMS is estimated at Rs. 10,34,700 crore, more than double the initial target of Rs. 4,56,000 crore. The application window, initially open for three months from 1 May, was extended until 30 September 2025 in response to the overwhelming industry interest.

Shri Vaishnaw highlighted that the ECMS is part of India’s broader vision to establish a $500 billion domestic electronics manufacturing ecosystem by 2030-31, building on the momentum from initiatives such as the EMC, SPECS, and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for mobile phones and IT hardware. “Each successive scheme has strengthened India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem,” he said, “and ECMS now stands poised to complete value chain integration, positioning India as a comprehensive global manufacturing hub.”

Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics & IT, Shri S. Krishnan, noted that the core objective of ECMS is to deepen domestic value chains, increase domestic value addition, and integrate India into global electronics supply chains. The Ministry lauded industry participants for demonstrating confidence in India’s manufacturing prowess, policy stability, and competitive advantages.

The Ministry has already initiated the approval process for eligible applicants, marking the first step toward realizing India’s strategic goal of a self-reliant and globally competitive electronics manufacturing base.
