JioPC Debuts as India’s Cloud-Based PC Alternative

JioPC

Reliance Jio Platforms has launched JioPC, a cloud-powered virtual desktop service that turns any television connected to a Jio Set-Top Box (STB) into a functioning personal computer. Designed to address India’s low PC penetration—estimated at just 15% of households—JioPC aims to bridge the digital divide by leveraging existing TV infrastructure, which is present in over 70% of homes.

Available as part of JioFiber plans or through a one-time payment of ₹5,499, JioPC offers an affordable computing alternative, particularly for students, first-time users, and rural households. Unlike traditional desktops and laptops, JioPC operates entirely on the cloud, eliminating the need for CPUs or hard drives. The system uses Ubuntu 22.04 Cinnamon Edition and includes 8 GB RAM, 100 GB of cloud storage, and 4 virtual CPUs, hosted on Intel Xeon servers.

The setup is simple: users connect a keyboard and mouse to their Jio STB, launch the JioPC app, register via OTP, and gain access to a virtual desktop environment. The system comes pre-installed with LibreOffice and supports browser-based apps like Google Docs and Microsoft 365, with limited peripheral support (no webcam or printer compatibility yet).

“JioPC flips the script on traditional computing by redefining access through cloud infrastructure,” said a company spokesperson. “It’s not just about cost—it’s about making digital empowerment truly inclusive.”

While JioPC supports essential tasks like document editing, browsing, and e-learning, it lacks the power for gaming or high-performance applications. Performance is smooth for light usage, with minor latency during video streaming.

JioPC’s pricing strategy includes a one-month free trial and a ₹599 monthly subscription (₹707 with GST). This model could significantly disrupt the entry-level PC and laptop markets, offering a viable and scalable solution for digitally underserved communities.

The launch aligns with Reliance’s broader vision of democratizing digital access across India. If successful, JioPC could become a cornerstone of affordable computing—offering millions a new gateway to education, e-services, and digital literacy.
