Blackmagic Design has launched the URSA Cine 12K LF Body, a stripped-down version of its flagship URSA Cine 12K camera, offering a more affordable option for seasoned cinematographers and rental houses. Priced at US$6,995, the body-only model eliminates several accessories like shoulder mounts, handles, and batteries, providing flexibility for professionals who already have the necessary equipment. This move reflects Blackmagic’s understanding of the demand for high-quality, customizable setups, giving users the freedom to tailor the camera to their specific needs.

The URSA Cine 12K LF Body retains the powerful 12K sensor and core features of its full-kit counterpart, ensuring no compromise on performance. Equipped with an EF lens mount, the camera is also compatible with interchangeable mounts, allowing users to adapt it to their preferred lens systems. A new CFexpress media module, including dual card slots, offers efficient media handling, while the camera’s ability to shoot in 12K, 8K, or 4K modes gives cinematographers creative control over resolution and framing.

With impressive frame rates—224 fps in 8K, 144 fps in 8K 3:2 open gate, and up to 80 fps in 12K—the URSA Cine 12K LF Body is designed to deliver exceptional image quality, even in high-speed scenes. Its large-format RGBW sensor and 16 stops of dynamic range offer enhanced color reproduction and VFX capabilities, making it suitable for a range of productions, from independent films to large-scale features.

Additionally, Blackmagic’s advanced color science and seamless integration with DaVinci Resolve ensure that the URSA Cine 12K LF Body excels in post-production workflows. Cinematographers can also make use of anamorphic lens compatibility, with de-squeeze options ranging from 1.3x to 2x, giving them more flexibility for cinematic visuals.

While the URSA Cine 12K LF Body is positioned as a lower-cost option, it retains all the technical specifications and durability of the complete URSA Cine 12K kit. Its robust magnesium alloy frame and lightweight composite skin make it durable yet manageable for on-set handling. The camera also offers a variety of connectivity options, including 12G SDI, USB-C, XLR audio, and 10G Ethernet for seamless media transfer and collaboration.

Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing professional-grade technology at an accessible price, noting that many customers expressed interest in a body-only version of the URSA Cine 12K. This new offering aims to meet those demands while providing a cost-effective upgrade path for existing Blackmagic users.

The URSA Cine 12K LF Body delivers an impressive balance of high-end performance and customization, making it an appealing option for professionals seeking a versatile, budget-conscious solution for 12K cinematography.
