Mark Wade Assumes Ayar Labs CEO Role in Silicon Photonics Drive

Mark Wade

Ayar Labs, a leading advocate in silicon photonics for chip-to-chip connectivity, has named Mark Wade, co-founder and CTO, as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Wade steps into this pivotal role at a time when the company is at the forefront of innovations in optical interconnect technology, particularly for large-scale AI compute and data-intensive workloads.

Expressing his gratitude for assuming the position, Mark Wade commented, “I’m humbled and honored to take on the role of CEO for Ayar Labs. Optical I/O presents unprecedented bandwidths, energy efficiencies, and latencies vital for modern computing. Guiding our team to harness this potential is a thrilling opportunity as we propel into our next growth phase.”

Matt Hershenson, partner and co-founder of Playground Global, highlighted Wade’s comprehensive understanding of Ayar Labs’ technology and its practical applications, deeming him the ideal leader for steering the company forward.

Mark Wade’s background as a pioneer in photonics technologies, particularly his leadership in designing optics for the world’s first processor communicating via light, lends credibility to his role. His tenure at MIT and UC Berkeley from 2010-2015 laid the groundwork for Ayar Labs’ breakthrough technology.

Ayar Labs’ strategic partnerships and investments from industry giants such as NVIDIA, Hewlett Packard Pathfinder, and Intel Capital have positioned the company to address the burgeoning demand for in-package optical I/O.

Will Graves, Chief Investment Officer at Boardman Bay Capital Management, lauded Ayar Labs’ progress in 2023 and anticipates continued success under Wade’s leadership in the coming years.

Former CEO Charles Wuischpard commended Wade’s instrumental role in Ayar Labs’ growth and expressed confidence in the company’s trajectory. He highlighted recent achievements, including showcasing the industry’s first 4 terabit-per-second (Tbps) optical solution.

Ayar Labs’ demonstration of an optically-enabled FPGA in collaboration with Intel’s Agilex® FPGA technology earlier this year showcased a significant leap in bandwidth, reduced power consumption, and latency. This innovation targets demanding workloads like generative AI and machine learning.
