IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), a leading quantum technology company, has announced a strategic partnership and investment with Heven AeroTech, a developer of hydrogen-powered unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for defense and aerospace applications. The agreement aims to integrate IonQ’s quantum computing, quantum networking, sensing, and security technologies into Heven AeroTech’s autonomous drone platforms.
The collaboration is designed to enhance operational performance, resilience, and security in GPS-denied environments, supporting applications in defense and national security. By combining IonQ’s quantum capabilities with Heven AeroTech’s hydrogen-powered drones, the companies aim to expand mission endurance, autonomy, and reliability.
Heven AeroTech, based in Virginia and founded in 2019, has pioneered hydrogen fuel cell propulsion in aerial vehicles. Its drones, including the Heven Z1, are capable of flights up to 600 miles and over 10 hours of continuous operation. The company’s focus on long-endurance, renewable-energy powered platforms allows for sustained missions with reduced logistical constraints.
Through the partnership, IonQ and Heven AeroTech plan to explore several areas of integration. Quantum networking and security technologies are expected to provide secure, reliable communication links between drones. Quantum computing may be used to optimize fleet routing and enhance real-time data processing of drone and satellite imagery. Quantum sensors could support alternative positioning, navigation, and timing capabilities for autonomous operations.
Ben Levinson, Founder and CEO of Heven AeroTech, noted that the collaboration would allow the company to extend the endurance and autonomy of its drones while incorporating advanced security measures. Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ, added that the partnership would position Heven AeroTech’s platforms to perform missions with precision and resilience beyond conventional capabilities.
As part of the agreement, Jordan Shapiro, President and General Manager of IonQ’s Quantum Networking, Sensing & Security division, will join Heven AeroTech’s Board of Directors. The move reflects IonQ’s efforts to apply its quantum technologies to practical aerospace and defense applications.
This initiative builds on IonQ’s broader strategy, including prior acquisitions of Vector Atomic and Capella Space, and its ongoing work on developing quantum-secure communications networks. It also complements the company’s engagement with U.S. defense projects, including multiple contracts with the U.S. Air Force Research Lab.
