Motorola Expands Defense Networking Portfolio With Silvus Acquisition

Motorola acquires Silvus

Motorola Solutions Inc. has finalized the acquisition of Silvus Technologies Holdings Inc., a Los Angeles-based developer of mission-critical mobile ad-hoc networks, or MANET, the companies said Thursday. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

Silvus, whose systems are deployed in defense, intelligence, law enforcement and commercial applications worldwide, builds mesh networking devices that enable secure voice, video and data communications in contested or infrastructure-limited environments. The technology links people, devices and nodes into large, scalable, self-healing networks capable of supporting high-bandwidth applications such as drone feeds, sensor data and video streaming.

Motorola Solutions Chief Executive Officer Greg Brown said Silvus’ offerings complement the company’s existing land mobile radio and video security portfolio. “Their advanced solutions for drone and unmanned systems are trusted in the world’s most demanding defense environments, and offer vital applications for border security and public safety,” Brown said in a statement.

The acquisition reflects growing demand for secure, low-latency communications to operate autonomous technologies — including drones, vehicles and robots — that can create standoff distances between personnel and threats. Silvus’ networks allow operators to maintain control of unmanned systems and relay mission data in real time, a capability viewed as increasingly critical in modern defense and security operations.

The company’s customer base spans defense agencies, unmanned systems manufacturers, intelligence organizations, police forces and enterprises. Motorola Solutions plans to leverage its global sales channels and government relationships to expand Silvus’ reach.

“Working with Babak and the Silvus team, we’ve seen firsthand how their expertise has created truly disruptive communications technology,” said Erik Fagan, partner and head of industrial technology at private equity firm TJC, a former investor in Silvus. “They’ve built an exceptional company serving a critical need, and we are excited to watch their next chapter unfold with Motorola Solutions.”

Silvus CEO Babak Daneshrad said the acquisition aligns with both companies’ shared mission to develop technologies that enhance safety. “Bringing our advanced engineering teams together amplifies our ability to build more powerful solutions to serve more customers globally,” he said.

Motorola Solutions, headquartered in Chicago, has made a string of acquisitions in recent years to bolster its public safety and security portfolio.
