A global provider of embedded computing technology, Kontron launches VX3406, a rugged 3U VPX Ethernet board designed for high-performance network communications in military and aerospace applications. The board is the first of its kind to offer six fully independent 1000BASE-T Ethernet ports, each managed by a dedicated controller to ensure zero bandwidth contention, enhanced fault isolation, and improved cybersecurity.
Targeted at C4ISR systems, unmanned vehicles, and other connected defense platforms, the VX3406 is built to operate reliably in harsh environments while delivering low power consumption and real-time data handling. The board features an 8-port, 8-lane PCIe Gen3 switch, enabling up to four independent 1G/2.5G TSN-capable ports and two additional 1G copper ports, supporting six simultaneous Ethernet connections.
By integrating Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) directly into the hardware, the VX3406 eliminates the need for legacy deterministic protocols or external switches, ensuring precise traffic prioritization and guaranteed delivery. This makes it suitable for latency-sensitive applications such as sensor fusion, mission coordination, and synchronized audio-video transmission.
“This is the first and only 3U VPX Ethernet card to deliver six completely independent ports,” said Christophe Ferrande, Product Manager at Kontron. “It sets a new standard for network performance and flexibility in defense and aerospace systems. And with design and support based in France, the VX3406 is not subject to ITAR restrictions, offering broader deployment potential.”
